Maintaining Fireplace Safety During the Holidays in a Historic Home

Few things are cozier when the holidays are here than sitting around a toasty warm fireplace. This is especially true in historic brick homes, whose architecture and charm make them the perfect place to gather with family and friends, especially when paired with a well-decorated mantel. However, fireplaces require attention to safety, including proper maintenance and secure décor. Planning ahead will ensure your celebrations remain joyful and incident-free.

Start with a Fireplace Safety Check

If you have not yet had a chimney inspection, getting one done before your first fire of the season is imperative. Over time, creosote and debris can build up in the flue, creating fire hazards and ventilation problems. This can cause a house fire and prevent smoke from venting properly, causing it to billow into your home. At best, poor ventilation pollutes the indoor air and creates a difficult-to-clean mess. At worst, carbon monoxide poisoning is a real and deadly threat.

A professional chimney sweep will examine your firebox, chimney and flue for cracks, creosote, and blockages. Cleaning will be performed, but if damaged masonry is discovered during the cleaning, such as cracks or failing mortar, it will need to be repaired by a team who has the knowledge of the traditional methods of tuckpointing and expertise in historic brick.

Stylish and Safe Mantel Decor

A beautifully decorated mantel showcases your holiday spirit and is perfectly suited to your home’s style. When decorating around a working fireplace, it’s vital to put safety first. Choose fire-resistant decorations over natural evergreens and other foliage that will dry out. Dry foliage can easily catch fire from stray sparks. Ensure all fire-resistant decorations, like garlands, bows and other hanging items are fastened securely and kept clear of flames and sparks. Never hang or drape anything over or near the firebox if you have a working fireplace.

Instead of evergreens, pinecones and paper swags, consider less risky décor options like flameless LED candles, glass ornaments and well-secured twinkling string lights. Today’s LED candles come in various styles and look quite realistic. You can also find battery-operated string lights, eliminating the need for unsightly cords.

If your fireplace doesn’t work, or you’d prefer a safer option, you can fill the fireplace with LED pillar candles. They will provide a warm glow without the hazards of open flames. As an added bonus, a completely flameless fireplace opens up your options and enables you to choose almost any decorations you desire.

Celebrate Safely This Holiday Season

In addition to a chimney inspection and safe décor, make sure you stick to safe habits around the fireplace. Keep at least three feet of clearance between the fireplace and flammable items, like rugs, furniture, Christmas trees and curtains. Use dry, well-seasoned hardwoods like oak or maple to limit creosote buildup. Ensure ashes are completely cool before disposal, and keep them in an approved ash container stored away from your historic brick home. Adding a fireplace screen or set of glass doors to the firebox will prevent sparks from escaping and improve your home’s overall safety.

By prioritizing safety and using fire-resistant materials, you can make your fireplace the centerpiece of the holidays while having peace of mind that there will be no unexpected surprises, only warm holiday memories for years to come.
